December 21st 2012- What a Mess. The TV shows and news reports are everywhere. December 21st 2012: Armageddon or evolution, apocalypse or spiritual transformation, the end of the Mayan calendar or the end of the world… what is the big deal? In this article I would like to cover some of the many predictions dealing with 12/21/12. I would also like to note here that for every prediction I researched I would find at least a few inconsistencies between the many articles dealing with the topic. I tried my best to sort through all of these to come as close as I can to the truth of each theory. For the most part the hubbub began with the study of the Mayan calendar. On the day of the winter solstice (or summer solstice if you are in the southern hemisphere) in 2012, it is told, a rare astronomical event occurs. This event coincides with a Mayan mythical event as well. In astronomic terms, the Sun conjuncts the intersection of the Milky Way and the ‘plane of the ecliptic‘. What exactly does that mean? Well the Milky Way extends in a north-south direction in the night sky. The ‘plane of the ecliptic’ is the apparent path the Sun, Moon, planets and stars travel in the sky, from east to west. During this event the Milky Way will intersect the plane at a 60 degree angle near the constellation Sagittarius. The formation creates a cross which was dubbed the “Sacred Tree” by the Maya. Mythically speaking, at sunrise on December 21, 2012, the Sun rises to conjoin the center of this Sacred Tree or Tree of Life. This event is foretold within the Mayan creation story. From what I understand of the story- this conjunction was present during the creation of the world and so holds great spiritual significance to the Maya. Purportedly the Sun has not conjoined the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic in aprox. 25,800 years. The Mayans calendar philosophy was based on cycles and it can get very confusing. On December 21, 2012 we reach the end of the “Great Cycle” phase which brings us to the “Great Year”. “The Great Year” comes only once aprox every 26,000 years (tho I have read this number reported as 13,000 as well). Astrologically, we see a shift from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. The Mayan calendar does not really say the world will end in 2012, it signifies the end of an age… and the rebirth of a new age. It is my belief that the Mayan civilization would have created another calendar for this new age, if they had survived to the present day. Mayan culture were not the only ones who assign significance to 2012. Listed below are several other 2012 theories. The Bible Code claims that, according to certain algorithms of the Bible code, a meteor, asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth. I honestly don’t know much about the bible code itself. I understand practitioners of this code take certain letters out of the bible and piece them together to make predictions. I found this page which shows many of the bible codes translated some corresponding to 2012. http://exodus2006.com/3code.htme.htm Here is one of the 2012 codes translated: Cosmic wretched commit For bitter impact Meager year 2010 Word of God God, year 2012, God And the blood will be throughout the earth. Now although this code is very interesting and there have been parts of the code that have been eerily on the mark… I am not a big proponent of creating fear. I noticed- at least on the couple sites I went to for research… almost all the codes were fear/worry inducing. Terrorism, natural disasters, comets and asteroids, disease… there were at least 3 times as many codes about disaster/destruction as there was about God, Jesus, love, friendship etc. I have read the bible and one thing God does not give is a spirit of fear. What would be the point of telling us about a comet which we can do nothing about? Obviously there are scientists all over the world who study comets and meteorite patterns. I would think these experts would know in advance whether or not a devastating impact was immanent. I read there was supposed to be a meteor passing close to earth in 2012- the source said this was direct from Nasa. Of course I searched the Nasa site and found nothing about a meteor. The Nasa site actually says: “Nothing much will happen to the universe or Earth and planets in December 2012.” Of course there are always surprises in the universe- so you never know. The Nostradamus Code speaks of a series of natural disasters caused by a comet which will allow the 3rd anti-christ to disperse his troops around the globe under the guise of aid in preparation for a possible nuclear war, although in the strictest sense it is unspecific as to nuclear war or some other natural or man caused distraction. Clearly Nostradamus was a skilled prophet, many of his predictions were accurate. I have read the ‘quatrains’ (what the sections of Nostradamus’ predictions are called) that supposedly deal with 2012. Most sources quote Century X Quatrain 72 as the beginning of the 2012 connection. The year 1999, seventh month, From the sky will come a great King of Terror: To bring back to life the great King of the Mongols, Before and after Mars to reign by good luck. To be honest it is very difficult to be exact when the prophesy is a poem filled with symbolism. The date this quatrain starts off with is 1999, the seventh month…. not the 12th month of 2012. I also read a report on Nostradamus.org that says the phrase “of terror” does not even appear in the actual text. This source also claims this quatrain deals with another event altogether! There also is another Nostradamus connection to 2012 gained through drawings relating to the astronomical event which is supposed to happen on December 21 2012. Nostradamus never said that the future was a set thing though- he is only showing us one of a few paths our futures could hold. This and the fact that everything he has written is left up to interpretation makes pinpoint predictions (such and such will happen on 12/21/12) difficult to believe at best. The Orion Prophecy claims that the Earth's magnetic field will reverse. The Orion Prophecy is actually a book written by Patrick Geryl. The author claims that through study of both Egyptian and Maya codes he has concluded we are on the verge of global disaster. The cause of this disaster is as follows: “the magnetic field of the earth will reverse in an instant, resulting in catastrophic consequences for humanity. Immense earthquakes will flatten all buildings on earth; while continents will shift thousands of kilometers and an all-demolishing tidal wave will leave billions of dead people behind.” Great lol just great. First of all the poles have shifted in the earths past- they are pretty much in a steady movement as the earth rotates the sun. There have also been magnetic shifts- like the one the author is describing. The scientific term is “geomagnetic reversal” and is defined: “a change in the orientation of Earth's magnetic field such that the positions of magnetic north and magnetic south become interchanged. These events often involve an extended decline in field strength followed by a rapid recovery after the new orientation has been established. These events occur on a scale of thousands of years or longer.” Well if they happen every couple 1,000 years or so- doesn’t seem to me that it will cause the global devastation the author is claiming. Obviously man has survived many of these reversals. I can see a possible problem with electrical devices, radio (*gasp*) and possibly even satellites etc- so there is a definite possibility of issues arising- but I don’t see civilization falling apart over it. 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl theorizes a possible global awakening to psychic connection by the year 2012. This theory is also based on a book “2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl” by Daniel Pitchback. Here we have "the conclusion of a vast evolutionary cycle, and the potential gateway to a higher level of manifestation." Pinchbeck theorizes we are in the final stages of a shift from a society based on materiality to one based on spirituality. He also experiments with the drugs (DPT and other psychedelics) which discredits him with many readers. Drug use aside- some of the reviews of this book are interesting and I think I will pick up a copy. Hopefully you don’t have to use psychedelic drugs to understand it! McKenna's mathematical novelty theory suggests a point of singularity in which a great number of things could happen, including "hyper spatial breakthrough", planetesimal impact, alien contact, historical metamorphosis, metamorphosis of natural law, solar explosion, quasar ignition at the galactic core, or nothing. Not even going to try to go into detail on this one. You can read more about it here: http://2012wiki.com/index.php?title=Novelty_theory_(Time_Wave_Zero) If you read down a bit on the page you see the actual date he originally came up with was mid November 2012 but when he noticed the proximity to the 12/21/12 date he changed his to match. The other thing that detracts from his theory (for me anyway) was reading this quote from the same reference: His predictions for this transcendent event were wide ranging and varied, depending on his audience, and different times he conjectured the following: the mass of humanity would, by means of some technology, become mentally conjoined in a great collective; the moment in which time travel became a reality; the birth of self-conscious artificial intelligence; a global UFO visitation; and occasionally he even expressed doubt whether anything at all would happen. So basically on December 21, 2012, something could happen… or nothing could happen… hummm sounds like just another wonderful day on earth to me! Lastly (for this article anyway) you have Alien and UFO enthusiasts who believe 2012 is either the beginning of a great awakening to the presence of alien beings on earth, the return of the aliens who helped us evolve or the date of an alien invasion. The amount of info on this topic alone could fill 10 articles. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to theories and predictions about 2012. At this point my head is spinning from all the different ideas people have come up with. What’s even more frustrating is trying to find credible information on the topic. For every article or website I would go to there were two others that would explain the same theory in a different way- or at least the details would not jive. Books completely contradict each other. That combined with the fact that 90% of them are dooms day/end of the world predictions could really get a person down! I choose to believe the facts- the facts that I can determine anyway. At first I thought the only fact I knew was that there was going to be a galactic alignment on the winter solstice December 21 2012. Did I really know that was a fact? I started searching for proof of this event. I searched on Nasa and found this quote by David Morrison a Nasa Senior Scientist : “There is no galactic alignment. This is one of the stranger claims of the 2012 conspiracy theories. I am certain that this has not been stated or predicted by scientists.” At this point I throw my hands in the air. The only fact I know is that no one really knows what will happen in 2012 or on December 21st of 2012. It is my feeling that the Maya would have had a huge celebration to welcome in the new age and would have felt blessed to live during a time of great transition. There are always disasters going on globally- just this morning I turned on the news to hear there are life threatening floods in ND, tornados in NC and a severe blizzard (I don’t remember where exactly) and this was just in the USA! I choose to hope that the Maya were right, that a new age is at its dawn and that new era will be one of hope and evolution of the human race towards higher levels of consciousness, awakening us to our fullest potentials. |
